All this week, I am sharing a behind-the-scenes look at the production of my new public television special, "The Holy Land: Israelis and Palestinians Today." In this clip, we visit the the Children’s Memorial at +Yad Vashem.

When considering the horror of the Holocaust, it’s hard to really imagine the extermination of six million people. And it’s hard to imagine that roughly a quarter of these people, slaughtered like animals, were children. The Children’s Memorial helps make it real.

"The Holy Land" has already aired on stations in several locations. Many other stations, such as WTTW Channel 11 in Chicago and KCTS 9 in Seattle, plan to air it soon. Call your local public television station to find out when you can see it too.

Em 'continuously',  a cadeia ininterrupta de 'o's e 'u's até o final nos lembra que significa 'ininterruptamente' ou 'constantemente', enquanto que em 'continually', esta cadeia de 'o's e 'u's (que existe na outra palavra) é interrompida pelos 'l's salientes, associando, assim, a palvra com pausas, interrupções e intervalos

Bottom line is... (em suma, a moral da história é ...):

 Será sempre mais seguro usarmos "to replace" para significar substituir uma coisa por outra, com o sentido de que o primeiro elemento é substituido pelo segundo (ou seja, usamos o segundo elemento):

"The administration is going to replace all the computers with newer models over the next couple of months."

"Edward Keating once observed that you do not destroy an idea by killing people; you replace it with a better one."

Já se quiser usar 'substitute', será mais seguro seguir a regra geral, mas sabendo que ainda haverá o risco de alguns falantes não a seguirem por vezes, o que poderá trazer problemas no entendimento da mensagem.

Regra geral para uso de 'to substitute':

A estrutura mais antiga e ainda a mais usada:

Substitute new for old. (Usar o primeiro elemento em lugar do segundo). Ou seja, a lógica desta estrutura é oposta à usada com 'replace' (que é "old for new")!

Esta estrutura logo abaixo, com 'with", tem se tornado muito comum, embora não tanto quanto a anterior. O autor do podcast, Neal Whitman, um doutor em Linguística, nos aconselha a só usá-la caso tenhamos algum a razão retórica preemente para fazê-lo:

Substitute old with new. (Usar o segundo elemento em lugar do primeiro; ou seja, a mesma lógica usada com 'replace')

Evite, ao máximo, usar a estrutura: 'substitute old for new', ou seja, para significar usar o segundo elemento em lugar do primeiro! E atenção especial ao risco maior de ela estar sendo usada em receitas culinárias, sendo motivo de confusão muitas vezes.
