"“After dealing with so much violence in the emergency rooms of Chicago hospitals, the Viet Nam war and observing the effects of violence in people's daily lives in my medical practice, I had reached a point in my life where I knew I had to make a serious effort to rid my own being of violence - my thoughts, words, and, above all, my actions. One evening in late 1980, while at a restaurant consuming a steak dinner, I was expounding on my desire to rid my life of violence when my dinner companion pointed out that my peaceful goals were all well and good, but if I was truly concerned about reducing the level of violence in my life that I both experienced and caused, I should begin with that piece of meat on my plate. He clearly stated that it was my desire for the taste of flesh in my mouth that directly caused the death of an innocent animal - and, indeed, my money actually paid the slaughterer for his killing. As much as I did not want to face that fact, I heard a small voice within me saying, "You know, he's right." And that started my serious journey toward becoming a vegan.
Every decision you make matters - including what you have for dinner - because each decision will make your world either more violent or less violent. A vegan world is a healthier, more peaceful world, and you can begin to create that world for yourself, today, by making vegan choices in your diet and your lifestyle.”

Re: muffin & cupcake? what's the diff?
Muffins - in England - are round flat rich bread cakes, eaten at breakfast. In Australia, they are sometimes known as Australian Toaster Biscuits.
Muffins - in America - are what we in England would call cupcakes.
Muffins - in Australia - can be sweet or savoury - in England we sometimes call the savoury version Buffins.
Cupcakes in England are like American Muffins, but generally smaller - they don't have icing on top.
Cupcakes in America are what we in England would call iced buns.
Cupcakes in Australia are also what we in England would call iced buns
Fairy Cakes are something entirely similar, but smaller.
Butterfly buns are again similar - just finished differently
Three nations, separated by a common language

I have to call you on this one Geoff, we call them the same as what you pommies do. Always have. They are muffins - or english muffins
It has a lot ot do with baking method.
American Muffins are made differently than cupcakes. The method is to blend the dry ingrediets and the wet ingredients seperately and then to very quickly mix the wet ingredients into the dry, until just combined but not over mixing (two or three stirs is all that is needed). The butter is also melted too and added to the wet mix before combining the wet and dry. The mix is than put into very large paper muffin cases or large muffin pans and baked
Cupcakes/fairycakes in Australia are made by creaming butter and sugar together than adding the eggs, flour, milk and whatever else is added. Spoonfuls of the mix are then placed into small paper 'patty pans' and they are baked. Once cool they are iced.
Fairy cakes are basically the same only when baked and cooled a wee piece is scooped out of the top, the hole is filled with jam and cream and then the top bit is halved and placed on the top of the cream like wee wings.
American or Jumbo Muffins have only really been popular in the last 10-12years.

Re: muffin & cupcake? what's the diff?
I am afraid Geoff that I agree with Cindy,
although we do have different muffins traditionaly in the UK ,when most people talk about muffins, they are refering to the american style muffins that are more like a cake texture, but the ones that I have seen are far larger than a 'fairy cake.
American style muffins are made as Cindy suggests , by combining dry ingredients seperatly from the wet ingredients. (When I have made these muffins a light oil is used as the 'fat' content where as in cupcakes/fairy cakes butter is used and creamed for the fat content.I notice that Cindy uses melted butter for muffins )
Wet and dry ingredients are combined by mixing them together for a few seconds and the mix does not have to be smooth.
Quickly poured into paper cases and baked.
Traditional muffins ,here in the UK are more bread like in texture, they are generaly around 1 1/2 inches in depth and a flattened surface, I say generaly as oven bottom muffins are often domed.
Cupcakes, to me , are similar to 'fairy cakes' and are made with a creamed method mixture. The mix will be airy, smooth and far thicker than american style muffin mix.
Both cupcakes and fairy cakes can be iced with a buttercream type icing/frosting.( and decorated!)
What we in the UK call 'Butterflycakes' are made like the fairycakes that Cindy mentions. A smallcircular slice removed from the very top of the fairy cake, 'butter cream icing' put into the dip that removing the top has made. The top that was removed cut into two and placed back onto buttercream icing the fairycake so that it resembles ' wee wings'
Iced buns ,to me are the traditional sweetened enriched bread that has been made into 'finger roll' type lengths, baked and iced with a simple icing made from icing / 'powdered' sugar and water or some other liquid.
Maybe what we all call things like this varies from region to region ,as well as country to country.
